Vintage and classic electrical — 6 volts, positive earth, and parts nobody stocks
At Kallukatti, Kaliyakkavilai — on the NH-47 (now NH-66), near the Nayara petrol pump. Vintage bench work is done at this branch.
Also called: old car wiring, dynamo, 6 volt, positive earth. If your vehicle predates the alternator, most workshops now predate the will to touch it. This bench does not.
When you need this
Bring the old vehicle here when: the dynamo has stopped charging and everyone else offers only an alternator conversion; the cut-out regulator has failed and nobody can source one; the cloth-wrapped loom is crumbling; the 6-volt self turns like it is tired of history; or a positive-earth system has confused a modern fitter into retreat.
Classic dead somewhere it should not be parked? Call 094872 34923 — describe the vehicle and its era; old systems have their own roadside logic and we speak it. Emergency help →
There is a generation of vehicles — Ambassadors, Premier Padminis, Standards, Willys Jeeps, the Morrises and Austins still hiding in sheds, the odd Contessa — whose electrical systems are now a foreign language to most of the trade. Six-volt circuits that modern meters misjudge. Positive earth, where a careless modern assumption reverses everything and cooks what it touches. Dynamos and their cut-out regulators, which no parts counter has stocked this century.
This bench still speaks that language, fluently and by preference. Dynamos are rebuilt — rewound where needed — and their cut-out regulators repaired, made, or sourced. Six-volt and positive-earth systems are diagnosed and repaired as what they are, not converted by default. Cloth-and-rubber looms are renewed with custom harnesses built in-house to the original routing, so the vehicle stays itself under the bonnet.
Where an owner wants discreet modernisation — 12-volt conversion, an alternator hidden in period clothing, indicators that satisfy today's traffic — we do it properly and reversibly where possible, and we will tell you honestly which originality is worth keeping and which is worth its weight in roadside breakdowns.

What it costs
| Vintage and classic electrical work | ₹12,000 – ₹35,000+ by the job — every old vehicle is its own estimate |
|---|
Old vehicles are quoted after inspection, honestly and per job — a dynamo rebuild, a loom, and a full restoration are different undertakings, and pretending one band covers them would insult all three.
Vintage & classic — what you should know
Positive earth is not a mistake to be corrected
Many classics were built positive-earth, and they run happily that way when serviced by someone who remembers the rules. The damage we repair usually happened when modern equipment — or a modern assumption — was connected without checking. First rule of an old vehicle: know which way it earths.
The dynamo is rebuildable — almost always
Brushes, bearings, field coils, armature rewinding: a dynamo is honest technology, built to be repaired, and a rebuilt one charges as it did when the vehicle was new.

Six-volt starting has its own rules
Half the voltage means double the current for the same work — so 6-volt systems live and die by their connections and earth straps. A tired 6V self often needs its cables and earths restored, not a 12-volt conversion; we check in that order.
Batteries for the old fleet
Six-volt and unusual-format batteries are arranged rather than shelf stock — call ahead with the vehicle and we will have the right battery waiting.

Vintage & classic — common questions
What does vintage electrical work cost?
₹12,000 – ₹35,000+ as a band, but the honest answer is per job after inspection — old vehicles hide their history under the wrap, and we quote what we can see plus how we handle what we find.
Should I convert to 12 volts?
Sometimes. A daily-driven classic gains reliability; a concours vehicle loses originality it cannot buy back. We lay out both sides for your vehicle and build whichever you choose — properly.
Can you make a wiring loom for a vehicle with no parts support?
Yes — custom harnesses to original routing are in-house work, correct gauges and period-appropriate finish included. It is the definitive cure for crumbling cloth insulation.
Do you work on old tractors and Jeeps too?
Gladly — working classics are still classics. Willys-era Jeeps and old farm machines share the same 6V, dynamo and magneto-era logic this bench keeps alive.
