Ignition switch repair — the small worn part that imitates every big failure
At Kallukatti, Kaliyakkavilai — on the NH-47 (now NH-66), near the Nayara petrol pump — and at our Pudukadai branch. Open from 8 AM, every day.
Also called: key switch, starting switch, ignition. Every start of the vehicle's life has passed through this one switch. After lakhs of turns, its contacts remember each one.
When you need this
The ignition switch belongs on your suspect list when: turning the key produces nothing at all — no click, no dash change; the vehicle starts only when the key is wiggled, prayed over or held just past the detent; everything cuts out over a pothole and returns on the next; or the key has become physically stiff, loose or reluctant in the barrel.
Key turning to silence somewhere inconvenient? Call 094872 34923 — sometimes a known wiggle gets you home once; describe it and we will tell you honestly whether to try or to wait for us. Emergency help →
The ignition switch is two devices sharing one keyhole: a mechanical barrel that reads the key's cut, and an electrical switch behind it that hands power to the dashboard, the fuel system and the self in stages. Both wear — the barrel from lakhs of insertions, the contacts from carrying real current every single start — and a worn switch is a gifted impressionist: it plays dead battery, failed self, loose earth and mystery cut-out, sometimes in the same week.
The giveaway is the pattern. A battery fault cares about time and load; a switch fault cares about the key — the angle it is held at, the wiggle that works, the bump that kills everything and the next bump that resurrects it. We test the switch's stages directly, so the impressionist gets unmasked before any bigger part is bought on its behalf.
Repairs go by wear: contacts serviced or the electrical half replaced, barrels repaired or renewed — matched to your existing key where the design allows, so one key keeps running the vehicle — and the connector behind the switch, which cooks on high-load vehicles, repaired properly rather than taped.
What it costs
| Ignition switch repair or replacement | ₹300 – ₹1,000 depending on barrel or contact work |

The staged test that convicts or clears the switch takes minutes — cheap insurance against replacing a healthy battery or self for a switch's crime.

Ignition switch — what you should know
The wiggle that works is evidence
If a particular jiggle reliably wakes the vehicle, the switch's contacts are worn to the edge — and the trick's days are numbered. Repair it while it is still a small job at the steering column, not a tow from wherever the trick finally fails.
Cut-out over bumps reaches this page too
A vehicle that dies over potholes and revives on the next jolt may be wearing this switch, a battery terminal, or a failing sensor — the pattern overlaps, and guessing is dear.
The wider mid-drive story sorts itself at vehicle stopped while driving →.
Autos wear this switch fastest
A working three-wheeler's switch sees more cycles in a year than a car's sees in five, in dust and weather besides — auto ignition switches are stocked, common, and same-day work here.
The auto's own no-start route is auto rickshaw not starting →.
Chipped keys change the repair, not the diagnosis
On immobiliser-era cars the barrel shares its neighbourhood with the transponder antenna, and switch work is done without disturbing the security side.
If the key itself has stopped being recognised, that is a different page: key programming →.

Ignition switch — common questions
What does ignition switch repair cost?
₹300 – ₹1,000 — contact-half work at the lower end, full barrel-and-switch replacement higher, with the staged test first so the switch is convicted before it is charged for.
Will I need new keys after a switch replacement?
Where the design allows, the new barrel is matched to your existing key; where it does not, you leave with the new keys working everything — door, boot and start — not a pocketful of separates.
Turn the key, total silence — switch or battery?
Both audition for that role. The split takes minutes on the meters: the battery answers under load, then the switch's stages answer one by one. You pay to fix whichever actually failed. The symptom route starts at self not working →.
My key is very loose in the barrel now.
A sloppy barrel is late-stage wear — it will eventually spin without commanding, or refuse the key outright. Renewing it on your schedule beats drilling it out on the road's schedule.
