Alternator and dynamo repair — rewound in-house, back the same day

At Kallukatti, Kaliyakkavilai — on the NH-47 (now NH-66), near the Nayara petrol pump — and at our Pudukadai branch. Open from 8 AM, every day.

after-hours emergency line — call any time: 094872 34923

Also called: dynamo, charging unit, generator. Around here the alternator is usually called the dynamo — on this page they mean the same repair, and the genuine old-style dynamo has its own corner below.

When you need this

The charging side is failing when: the red battery lamp stays on or flickers at idle; the lights go dull at idle and brighten when you rev; a good battery keeps going flat; or the vehicle died on the road with the lamp glowing and now cranks weakly.

Died on the road with the battery lamp on? Call 094872 34923 — a vehicle running on battery alone has limited minutes left, and restarting it repeatedly makes it worse. Emergency help →

Most workshops treat a failed alternator as a parts order: take it off, fit a new one, hand over the bill. Ours is a repair bench. Diode packs, brushes, slip rings, bearings and full armature rewinding are done in-house at Kallukatti — which is why the usual answer is a repaired unit back on the vehicle the same day, at a fraction of a new unit's price.

The commonest failure we open up is rectifier diode burnout, and it is a local disease: extreme heat, monsoon moisture, coastal salt air and road dust all work on the same small pack of diodes while the unit runs hot in traffic. When one goes, charging drops before it stops — the battery lamp flickers at idle for weeks before the morning the vehicle will not crank.

And when repair is not the economical answer — a cracked casing, a burnt stator beyond rewinding — we say so, price the new unit, and fit it the same day. Repair-first is a judgement made on the bench, not a slogan.

What it costs

Alternator or dynamo repair and rewinding ₹600 – ₹2,500 depending on the fault and the unit
Full battery and charging system check from ₹100

The check comes first, and it protects you both ways: a battery problem never gets billed as an alternator problem, and the price you approve is for the fault the bench actually found.

Check the whole chain before blaming the alternator

Battery test free, and the full charging-system check from ₹100 — output at idle, output under load, and the state of the connections in between. Half of the "alternator complaints" that arrive here are something cheaper: a slipping belt, a corroded earth, a battery at the end of its life. A few minutes on the meters settles it before you approve anything.

Alternator repair — what you should know

Rewinding versus replacement, honestly

Rewinding wins when the windings are burnt but the frame, shaft and slip rings are sound — common, and much cheaper than a new unit. Replacement wins when the casing is cracked, the core is cooked, or the vehicle is new enough that a warranty-backed unit makes better sense. We price both paths and tell you which one we would choose on our own vehicle.

Why diodes burn out in this belt

The rectifier pack turns the alternator's output into the DC the vehicle uses, and it hates exactly what this coast supplies: heat, damp monsoon air, salt and dust. If your lights flicker in step with the engine, or the lamp glows faintly only at idle, the diodes are usually where the story ends.

Real dynamos, still repaired here

Pre-alternator vehicles — Ambassadors, old Jeeps, the 6-volt generation — carry a genuine dynamo, and we still rebuild them, cut-out regulators included.

Trucks, tractors and JCBs included

Heavy-vehicle alternators and their higher outputs are bench-standard work here, including 24V systems — and a machine's charging fault is usually cheaper to repair than a day of it standing idle.

Alternator, or just the battery?

Died while driving, battery lamp on, flat again after a jump — the charging side has failed.

Slow to crank on cold mornings but perfect once running — look at the battery first, not the alternator.

Alternator repair — common questions

How long does an alternator repair take?

Same day on most units when the vehicle is in by morning — rewinding included. Uncommon units can need a day for parts; you get the honest estimate before we start.

My lights get brighter when I rev the engine. Alternator?

That swing usually means charging output is low at idle — worn brushes, a slipping belt or a failing diode. Worth a check now: caught early it is a small repair, ignored it strands you.

Can I drive with the battery light on?

Briefly — the vehicle is running on the battery alone and will stop when it empties, often within the hour. Switch off what you can and come straight in, or call for roadside help.

Do you repair auto rickshaw charging systems?

Yes — three-wheeler charging faults are daily work here, and on autos the fault is often the regulator-rectifier rather than the alternator itself. Regulator and rectifier repair →

A new battery lasted me two weeks. Why?

Because the battery was never the fault — an alternator that is not charging kills new batteries in days. The charging check finds this before you buy a second battery in a month.
