Sensor replacement, calibration and relearn — the last step is the one that matters

At Kallukatti, Kaliyakkavilai — on the NH-47 (now NH-66), near the Nayara petrol pump. Sensor diagnosis and relearn work is done at this branch.

after-hours emergency line — call any time: 094872 34923

Also called: sensor, pickup coil. A modern engine is run by the testimony of its sensors. When one starts lying, the engine believes the lie — and the symptoms look like anything at all.

When you need this

Sensors move up the suspect list when: the check light has a favourite fault code; the engine stalls at signals or idles like it is nervous; the ABS lamp has joined the dashboard; fuel consumption has quietly worsened; or the vehicle cuts out when hot and restarts when cooled — the crank sensor's signature move.

Cut out on the road, restarted after cooling, scared to trust it? Call 094872 34923 — that hot-cut pattern is diagnosable, and driving on hope is the expensive plan. Emergency help →

A sensor job done properly has three parts, and the third is the one that separates a workshop from a parts stall. First, prove the sensor is actually the liar — with live data on the scanner, not just a code, because a chafed wire throws the same code as a dead sensor and costs a fraction. Second, fit the right part. Third — the skipped step — calibrate and relearn: teach the ECU that its informant has changed, reset the learned values built on the old sensor's drift, and confirm the fault stays gone under real driving.

Skip the relearn and the classic complaint follows: new sensor, same lamp, third workshop. The ECU is still correcting for a sensor that no longer needs correcting, the idle hunts, and the code returns like a season. Our scan equipment does the relearn properly on all the makes this district drives.

Crank and cam sensors, oxygen sensors, airflow and MAP, temperature senders, ABS wheel sensors — tested, fitted and taught. And when the live data says the sensor is innocent and the wiring guilty, you pay for a wiring repair instead; the sensor stays in its box.

What it costs

Sensor diagnosis, replacement and relearn ₹600 – ₹2,000 plus the sensor itself, by make

The diagnosis fee folds into honest work: if live data clears the sensor, you hear it — a part not fitted is the cheapest repair on this page.

Sensors — what you should know

The hot-cut, cool-restart pattern

An engine that dies warm and revives cooled is the crank position sensor's calling card — the winding fails with heat and recovers with it. It is one of the most misdiagnosed faults in the belt, and one of the most satisfying to prove.

Died mid-drive and hunting causes? Start at vehicle stopped while driving →.

ABS lamp is usually a wheel sensor — or its ring

ABS wheel sensors live in the worst neighbourhood on the vehicle: heat, water, mud and vibration at each corner. The sensor, its wiring, or the toothed ring it reads can each raise the lamp; we test which before anything is bought.

Mileage crept up? An oxygen sensor ages silently

A tired O2 sensor rarely lights the lamp early — it just biases the fuelling rich while consumption drifts. If fuel bills rose without a reason, sensor data is worth ten minutes of anyone's time.

The code names a sensor; the wire did it

Fault codes accuse the circuit, not the component — and in this climate, connectors and chafed looms confess as often as sensors do.

When the trail leads into the loom, the repair moves next door: wiring and harness repair →.

Sensors — common questions

What does sensor work cost?

₹600 – ₹2,000 for the diagnosis, fitting and relearn, plus the sensor by make and type. The proof-first step means you never buy a sensor the data does not convict.

A new sensor was fitted elsewhere and the light is back.

The commonest arrival on this page. Either the relearn was skipped, the part is wrong or aftermarket-poor, or the sensor was never the fault — live data tells us which within the hour.

Which sensors do you handle?

Crank, cam, oxygen, airflow, MAP, coolant and temperature senders, ABS wheel sensors and their rings — across cars, pickups, lorries and machines. If it reports to a computer, it lands on this bench.

Is the engine light always a sensor?

No — it is the ECU reporting anything it dislikes. Reading it properly comes first: engine check light →, and the full reading is the diagnostic scan →.
