Fuse box, relay and earthing faults — small parts, big mysteries, quick cures

At Kallukatti, Kaliyakkavilai — on the NH-47 (now NH-66), near the Nayara petrol pump — and at our Pudukadai branch. Open from 8 AM, every day.

after-hours emergency line — call any time: 094872 34923

Also called: fuse, relay, fuse board, earthing. Between the battery and every gadget sit three humble gatekeepers — fuse, relay, earth — and most one-system failures are one of the three.

When you need this

Come here when: one system has died while everything else works — horn silent, wipers asleep, AC fan gone; something works only when it feels like it, or after a thump on the dash; a relay clicks madly under the bonnet; or several odd faults share one corner of the vehicle.

Something vital dead and rain or night coming? Call 094872 34923 — a dead-wiper or dead-light fault is often a minutes-long fix once it is in front of us. Emergency help →

When one circuit dies and the rest of the vehicle carries on, the loom is rarely the villain — the failure lives at a junction. A fuse has opened, a relay's contacts have burnt or its coil has given up, or an earth point has quietly grown the crust that turns good circuits into part-time ones. These are the cheapest faults in auto-electrical work, and the most misdiagnosed, because their symptoms wear other parts' costumes.

Earthing deserves special mention, because it is the fault this district's damp and salt manufacture in bulk and the one most workshops skip past. A corroded earth does impressions: of a weak battery, a lazy starter, dim lights, gauges that wander. We check earth points as a matter of routine — cleaned, tightened and protected, they end problems that have survived several part replacements elsewhere.

The work itself is honest and small: test the circuit, find the gatekeeper that failed, put it right, and — the part that matters — say why it failed, so a blown fuse's cause does not send you back next month.

What it costs

Fuse box, relay or earthing fault — found and repaired ₹150 – ₹500 for most faults of this family

The commonest jobs on this page sit at the small end of the workshop's price list — which is exactly why it is worth fixing them before they grow up into wiring damage.

Fuses, relays & earthing — what you should know

A fuse that blows once versus one that keeps blowing

Blown once, cause found, replaced at the correct rating — done. Blowing repeatedly means a live fault is being silenced, and a bigger fuse is a fire being scheduled.

The repeat offender needs the measured hunt: short-circuit and current-leak tracing →.

Relays fail in two voices

Silence — the coil is dead and the system never wakes; or chatter — rapid clicking as burnt contacts make and break. Either way the relay is a plug-in cure once identified, and we keep the common ones in stock for cars, autos and commercial vehicles.

The earth fault that survived three mechanics

If a fault comes and goes with bumps, weather or engine movement — and parts keep getting changed without cure — ask for the earth points to be checked first here. It is a frequent end to long stories.

Fuse board upgrades on old vehicles

Vintage and much-repaired vehicles often carry fuse boards from another era, brittle and improvised. We renew boards and bring circuits to sensible protection without losing the vehicle's character.

Older machines have their own bench: vintage and classic electrical →.

Fuses, relays & earthing — common questions

One thing stopped working — what will it cost to find?

₹150 – ₹500 covers most fuse, relay and earthing work including the finding. If the trail leads somewhere bigger, you hear the new diagnosis and price before anything continues.

Can I just keep replacing the fuse myself?

At the same rating, while you arrange the visit, yes. Never with a higher-rated fuse or foil — the fuse is protecting the wiring, and defeating it moves the failure into the loom, at loom prices.

Why does my problem vanish at the workshop?

Intermittent junction faults are shy — heat, damp and vibration bring them out. Tell us exactly when it misbehaves; the pattern usually points at the junction, and earth points get checked on principle.

Do autos and lorries have the same faults?

The same three gatekeepers, harder lives — vibration and weather age them faster on working vehicles. Same-day fixes in almost all cases.
