When you need this

The self is the suspect when: you turn the key and get one loud click but no crank; there is a grinding or screeching as it engages; it works some mornings and not others; or there is nothing at all while the dash lights sit there looking healthy.

A self-starter has one violent job: throw a pinion into the flywheel and spin the whole engine, on demand, hundreds of amps at a time. The parts that do this wear in predictable ways — and nearly all of them are rebuildable. Solenoid contacts, carbon brushes, bushes, the bendix drive, and the armature winding itself are all repaired on our bench at Kallukatti, with rewinding done in-house rather than sent away.

The two failures we see most are burnt solenoid contacts — that famous single click, everything else silent — and carbon brushes worn down or fouled where water has found its way in. Both are small-money repairs when caught, and both are routinely misdiagnosed as a dead battery, which is why the battery is tested first, free, before the self is condemned.

In by morning, out the same day for most units — car, auto, lorry, tractor or JCB. When a starter is genuinely past rebuilding, we price a replacement plainly and fit that instead.

Self-starter repair — what you should know

One click, lights still bright

That is the classic solenoid signature: the command arrives, the contacts are too burnt to pass the current, and nothing turns. It is one of the cheapest starter faults to put right — and one of the most common reasons a healthy battery gets replaced for nothing.

Works sometimes, not always

An intermittent self is usually brushes at the end of their length or a connection breathing its last — it will become a permanent no-start soon, and it chooses its morning badly. Repairing it on your schedule beats repairing it on the roadside's.

Grinding or screeching on start

The bendix drive or the flywheel ring gear. Caught early it is a starter-side repair; ignored, the ring gear wears and the job grows teeth — literally. Stop cranking and have it looked at.

Water is the quiet killer

Monsoon fords and pressure-washing push water where the brushes live. If the self went lazy after the rains, the diagnosis usually takes minutes — and rewinding rescues units that look finished.

How much does self-starter repair cost?

₹500 – ₹1,800, settled after the bench finds the actual fault — a solenoid contact job sits at the bottom of that band, a full rewind higher. You approve the figure before work starts.

Same day?

Usually, when the vehicle is in by morning — the bench, the parts and the rewinding are all in-house, so nothing waits on a courier.

Repair or new starter — which is smarter?

Repair, most of the time: the wearing parts are replaceable and a rebuilt unit on a sound frame runs for years. We recommend a new unit only when the arithmetic genuinely favours it, and we show you that arithmetic.

My auto's self is weak every morning.

Three-wheeler selfs live a hard life and we rebuild them daily — but a weak morning crank can also be the auto's battery or charging. The free battery test comes first, then the self gets blamed only if it earned it.

Push-starting works. Can I just keep doing that?

It proves the engine and battery are willing, and it will strand you the first time you park nose-in somewhere. The fault it hides is usually small today and bigger every month.
